      Leading by Example

The Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School family lost a dear friend April 23, 2006, when Kathy Smith the School's Director of Major and Planned Gifts, passed away at age 59 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Joining the MICDS staff in 2001 melded Kathy's personal and professional lives. Her ties to the school began in the 1950s as a young girl when she attended Mary Institute and graduated as a member of the Class of 1964. Her numerous MICDS family ties include daughter Carrie Smith Marks '91; son Scott A. Smith '95 and four other family members. Kathy served as president of the MICDS alumni association and on the MICDS board of trustees.

As daughter Carrie noted, "Working at MICDS was more than a career to her, but a calling." Throughout her tenure, it was clear that impacting MICDS, its students and alumni was a labor of love. Kathy personally met with over 300 alumni locally and across the country. She grew the Eliot & Thompson Planned Giving Recognition Society by over 25% to a roster of 115 members and launched an on-line planned giving site. She influenced all members of the school's Planned Giving Committee to include MICDS in their estate plans just as she did.

By including MICDS in her own estate plans, Kathy once again demonstrated her love and commitment to MICDS. Her bequest gift combined with the many contributions given in her memory will impact school's students and faculty for years to come.

Kathy was also a very active volunteer at numerous St. Louis nonprofits throughout her life including the Junior League, the Woman's Exchange, Mercantile Library, Thompson Center, the United Way, and St. Peter's church.

Kathy's 1964 Mary Institute yearbook page captured her warmth and spirit, noting "Kathy would give you the world if you asked for it." Years later, her loving spirit was reflected back at her as her MI classmates created Kathy's Angels to provide her with everything from home cooked meals to Christmas holiday decorating. In her eulogy, Carrie remarked on the moral of Kathy's life-story, "to live fully and with integrity. To live with deep faith and conviction. To love, unabashedly. To never waste an opportunity to be kind, or to make your mark on the world." Kathy did all of that, and much more.

In addition to the many people associated with the community organizations who miss Kathy, she is missed by members of the St. Louis Planned Giving Council and her many friends in the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
