      A Legacy of Helping Others

With an amazing spirit and a passion for helping others, Dr. Helen Aff-Drum has dedicated her life's work to pediatric medicine and the fight against infectious diseases.

Dr. Aff-Drum, whose grandfather founded the town of Affton, Mo., graduated from medical school at Washington University and went on to do her internship with St. Louis Children's Hospital during the Depression. Dr. Aff-Drum fondly remembers living at the hospital and learning to treat the "whole child." After one year at John Hopkins Hospital and two years at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she became a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 1938, Helen married Dr. Clarence Drum and the two had a medical practice together. The Drums shared a love for medicine and family. Just before World War II, the couple bought a farm in Warren County.

Sadly, in 1960, Clarence passed away. Helen continued with their practice until 1964, but her career shifted to caring for kids in the Clayton schools and by starting well-baby clinics in Warrenton and Troy, Missouri. From 1963 to 1992, she treated adults and children with tuberculosis for the St. Louis County Health Department. Dr. Aff-Drum was committed to stopping the spread of infectious diseases and she found this to be her life's calling.

At age 97, Dr. Drum still reads medical journals and manages her farm. Troubled by the re-emergence of tuberculosis among immigrant populations, Helen decided to make a gift to St. Louis Children's Hospital to continue her fight against infectious diseases.

More than 65 years after the Drums purchased their farm, the value of the land had risen tremendously. Selling it outright would have reduced her sale proceeds by more than 20 percent after capital gains taxes. By gifting the land to a charitable remainder trust, Dr. Drum earned a tax deduction and created an income stream for 14 years. As Trustee, she could sell the land without incurring capital gains taxes and reinvest the proceeds to generate a secure income. The new income enables her to help fund her great-grandchildren's college education. When the trust ends, the gift will come to Children's Hospital and establish an endowment in Dr. Drum's name to benefit the hospital's infectious disease department.

"Saint Louis Children's Hospital was so much a part of my life," she says. Now, through her generosity, Dr. Aff-Drum's legacy of caring for children will continue to touch other lives for years to come.
